Tsawwassen First Nation has ended its National Truth and Reconciliation Day ceremony early due to a collision that sent four people to hospital, killing two of them.
Delta Police said the “serious collision” on TFN lands in South Delta happened shortly before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday (Sept. 30).
“Four pedestrians were struck and, tragically, two people have died as a result of their injuries,” Delta Police said in a release. “Preliminary information indicates the driver of the involved vehicle may have experienced a medical emergency prior to the collision.”
Police said the crash was not related to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation event that Tsawwassen First Nation was hosting, which included a community walk that started at 9:30 a.m. at the TFN Recreation Centre. That was to be followed by the unveiling of a House Post at Tsawwassen Mills shopping centre.
A TFN statement shared that “Tsawwassen First Nation is deeply saddened to confirm that an incident occurred during today’s Truth and Reconciliation Walk. Emergency responders remain on site. We ask members of the public to avoid the area and allow responders to carry out their work. Out of respect for Tsawwassen First Nation families and ongoing response efforts, we will not be providing additional details at this time.”
Those in the area are asked to follow the direction of local authorities.
Delta Police are on scene and investigating; they also advised the public to avoid the area, but said there is no “ongoing risk” to public safety.
“Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and all those affected by this tragic incident,” DPD shared.
Delta civic mayoral candidate Dylan Kruger shared a post on X about the incident.
“While we await more information, our thoughts are with Tsawwassen First Nation, event participants and everyone affected by this morning’s emergency alert,” he said. “We urge the public to respect the request to stay clear of the Tsawwassen Mills area and to follow updates from local authorities.”
The investigation remains in its early stages — anyone with information, including dash camera footage from the area at the time of the incident, is asked to contact Delta Police at 604-946-4411.
This is a developing story. More to come …
