A national comedy tour that raises money for local charities will return to Red Deer this month.

The Hungry for Laughs Comedy Tour, founded by comedian Alex Mackenzie, will stop at the Red Deer Memorial Centre on Oct. 17. The show will raise money for Saving Grace Animal Society, an animal-rescue organization in Alix.

“We wanted to create something bigger than just a comedy show,” said Mackenzie, who has appeared on Amazon Prime and the Melbourne Comedy Festival.

“When people come out, they’re not only having a great night; they’re helping make a difference right here in their community.”

Since its launch in 2019, the tour has raised more than $65,000 for local charities across Canada, partnering with organizations in each city to give back directly to the communities it visits. The tour has been coming to Red Deer for about five years.

Initially, Hungry for Laughs supported local food banks. Over time, the tour began supporting charities of all kinds.

Mackenzie will be joined by Brittany Lyseng, who was the first-ever Canadian woman to win the Seattle International Comedy Competition; Ola Dada, a Nigerian-born comedian who was a runner-up in the SiriusXM Top Comic Competition and a semifinalist on Canada’s Got Talent; and Efthimios Nasiopoulos, who has performed at Just For Laughs Northwest, The Hubcap Comedy Festival, CBC’s The Winnipeg Comedy Festival and CBC’s LOL.

Produced by Canadian-owned ECL Productions, the Hungry for Laughs Comedy Tour is making two stops in Alberta this year: Red Deer and Grande Prairie. There will be several shows in British Columbia throughout October and November.
