The B.C. NDP is calling on the B.C. Conservatives to drop incumbent North Island candidate Anna Kindy for her 2022 statements on the COVID-19 vaccines ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

New Westminster-Coquitlam NDP incumbent Jennifer Whiteside re-shared the video of Kindy to social media on Thursday (Oct. 1), saying that COVID-19 vaccine misinformation made the pandemic worse and has led to Canada losing its measles elimination status.

Whiteside also called on B.C. Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson to fire Kindy as a candidate.

“Lorne Doerkson has the opportunity to do the right thing now that he is leader of this party,” Whiteside said. “He can stand up and say that these views are not acceptable in his party. He can stand up and he can say that he will support our public health officials in caring for British Columbians and in leading health approaches to things like the COVID pandemic.”

The clip Whiteside shared is from a March 5, 2022 video of Kindy speaking on the steps of the B.C. legislature, regarding the COVID-19 vaccine, vaccine mandates and masking. It was posted by We Unify.

In the video, Kindy stands in front of dozens of people holding signs on the steps of the legislature. She also describes some of her codes of ethics as a physician.

“My job is to take care of you to the best of my ability. I am not perfect, but I will strive to look for the truth and strive to do no harm. As science evolves, my treatment plan will evolve. I will be open to scientific debate and other treatment options.”

She goes on to say the COVID-19 vaccines are “leaky” and “experimental” vaccines. She added that most people had “natural immunity.”

“Natural immunity is superior to vaccines for protection against COVID-19.”

Health Canada’s webpage on the COVID-19 vaccines says that “vaccination may offer additional protection against transmission even if infection is not prevented as it may reduce viral load and duration of infection.”

At the time of the video, Kindy was speaking in her role as a physician.

Kindy received disciplinary letters from the College of Physicians and Surgeons regarding misinformation surrounding COVID-19 vaccinations.

Kindy wasn’t elected as MLA until the 2024 provincial election. She’s held the role of health critic for the Official Opposition.

A statement from a B.C. Conservative campaign spokesperson said, “David Eby doesn’t want to talk about his failed record running the province, so instead he’s trying to talk about a previously aired, old story from many years ago.”

Doerkson was also asked – in an unrelated news conference – if the party would be keeping Kindy as a candidate.

He said the party is focused on putting forward 92 “amazing candidates,” but didn’t specifically address the call to drop her as a candidate.

Doerkson also echoed the campaign statement, adding that Eby is “focusing on anything he can to change that narrative.”

Ahead of the 2024 provincial election, B.C. United raised concerns about some of Kindy’s views.

The Elections BC deadline for candidates is Saturday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m.
