Warfield resident Warren Mirko will run for the BC Conservatives in the upcoming provincial election.

Mirko announced his candidacy on Sept. 28 and will vie for the Kootenay-Monashee seat against BC NDP incumbent Steve Morissette of Fruitvale in the Oct. 24 BC Election.

The Green Party has yet to name a candidate for the riding.

Mirko moved to the West Kootenay with his wife and two children in 2021.

He emersed himself in the community, and joined committees in Warfield and Trail, while founding and leading a provincial non-profit society, the Public Land Use Society, focused on land-use policy and government decision-making across the province.

Mirko was recently acclaimed Warfield councillor in the run up to the Oct. 17 Municipal Election.

According to his biography, Mirko has 15 years experience in public relations, crisis response, and risk management, supporting public protection mandates at BC Financial Services Authority Engineers and Geoscientists BC, Transport Canada and other regular authorities.

He has written and spoken extensively on land use, natural resource governance, and Crown land policies.

“Living in a small community, spending much of my free time on public land, and working closely on land-use and governance issues has given me a direct appreciation for how decisions made in Victoria can have a disproportionate impact on rural BC,” said Mirko in his candidacy announcement.

“For communities, businesses and families that depend on access to land, natural resources and clear, predictable rules, there is colossal importance in knowing who governs B.C., how those decisions are made, and whether the public has a democratic voice in them.”

As for financial accountability, Mirko has criticized the provincial government’s spending and deficit increases, calling for tighter management of public finances.

“Living here and doing that work has become a big part of why I want to represent this region,” said Mirko. “Over the next few weeks, I’ll be travelling across Kootenay–Monashee to meet people and listen to what communities across the riding need from their next MLA.

“I’d be glad to visit in person anywhere in the riding to hear what matters most.”

Mirko also holds a degree in Political Science from UBC.
