Red Deer Rebels rookie Paxson Madill has been impressive to start his Western Hockey League career.
Through his first five games, the five-foot-seven, 135-pound forward has tallied four assists.
“I’m just playing my game. I’m a smaller forward who likes to make plays. I’m just going to keep doing that,” he said.
Madill has played with a few different forwards early on in the 2026-27 season. He most recently played alongside Rebels captain Beckett Hamilton and Poul Andersen. As of Oct. 6, Hamilton and Andersen were the top point producers in the WHL.
“They’re super special players. They know where to be on the ice and they’re very skilled. They’ve been in this league for a while too, so they know what it’s like,” said Madill.
Madill grew up in Hermantown, Minnesota, a town of about 10,000 people well known as a hotbed of hockey.
“There are a bunch of outdoor hockey rinks that all your buddies play on. (Hermantown) has produced a lot of great hockey players over the years,” said Madill.
Madill was selected by the Rebels with the 42nd pick in Round 2 of the 2025 WHL U.S. Priority Draft. He then signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the team this past summer.
Last season, Madill recorded 34 points in 27 games (11 goals and 23 assists) with his hometown Hermantown Hawks in the United States High School-Minnesota (USHS-MN) league. Prior to being drafted by the Rebels, Madill racked up 26 points in 17 games (12 goals and 14 assists) with the Minnesota Voyageurs 14U AAA.
The Rebels host the Edmonton Oil Kings on Monday, Oct. 12 at the Marchant Crane Centrium, with puck drop set for 2 p.m.
Red Deer will then play host to the Victoria Royal on Friday, Oct. 16, with puck drop set for 7 p.m. The Rebels then head to Calgary to battle the Hitmen on Saturday, Oct. 17 for a 1 p.m. matchup.
