The Ponoka Legion is commemorating two traditional events, Decoration Day and Veteran’s Day, with an event on Sunday, Sept. 27.
There will be a gathering at Forest Home Cemetery to place flags on veterans’ graves, starting at 10:30 a.m., followed by a short ceremony at the legion.
The event is open to the public and all are welcome to attend, said legion treasurer Joanne Palechek.
Attendees will meet in the centre of the cemetery, in the area known as the “Field of Honour,” where there are two areas close together of veteran gravesites.
Canadian flags will be placed on each head stone of a fallen service member laid to rest in the Field of Honour, as well as on headstones of service members located elsewhere through the cemetery.
The flags will be placed in order to honour their memory and sacrifice, and then removed later in the day.
Invited guests include Mayor Kevin Ferguson, Reeve Paul McLaughlin, the Ponoka Air Cadets and Boy Scouts.
The guest speaker for the ceremony at the legion will be Captain Cody Kroening, from Ponoka, who is a recruitment officer for the Canadian Armed Forces.
The next event coming up for the legion is the annual Candlelight Vigil, which will be held on Oct. 5, at the Ponoka cemetery, at 7 p.m.
