The Kitimat Ice Demons opened their CIHL season with back-to-back losses in Quesnel, falling 23-4 to the Kangaroos on Oct. 3 before holding the home side to a much smaller margin in a 7-0 defeat the following night.
Quesnel built a 6-1 lead through the opening period of the first game. Tavis Roch opened the scoring at 18:29, and the Kangaroos added four more before Brayden Dale converted a power play with 1:39 remaining.
Lucas Aiken answered for Kitimat just over a minute later, scoring unassisted with 37 seconds left on the clock to get the Ice Demons on the board.
The Kangaroos then took control of the second, scoring five times in the opening half of the period to extend the lead to 11-1.
Kitimat responded when a tripping penalty to Michael Wakita gave the Ice Demons a power play. Carter Mowbray converted at 9:18, with assists from Ryder Hobenshield and Brock Minaker, but Quesnel answered nine seconds later and continued to add to its lead.
A series of unsportsmanlike-conduct penalties late in the period gave Kitimat another man-advantage opportunity. Cory Mertin scored at almost three minutes in, assisted by Minaker, for the Ice Demons’ second power-play goal.
Quesnel still had the final word in the period, with Hayden Wiebe scoring shorthanded with 13 seconds remaining to send the Kangaroos into the third with a 16-3 lead.
Two more Quesnel goals early in the third extended their lead further before a five-minute cross-checking penalty to Brody Dyck gave Kitimat an extended power play.
Hobenshield capitalized at 13:42, finishing a setup from Mowbray for Kitimat’s third power-play goal of the game. Quesnel again responded while down a skater, however, as Jesse Pomeroy scored shorthanded.
Kangaroo Colton Thon added two goals 37 seconds apart midway through the period before late Kitimat penalties gave the Kangaroos further power-play opportunities. Brayden Dale scored with 1:49 remaining and Wiebe added another with 39 seconds left to complete the 23-4 result.
Kitimat reduced the spread considerably in the rematch the following night, but was unable to get on the scoresheet in a 7-0 loss.
Brayden Dale opened the scoring early in the first period before Thon added a power-play goal later in the frame to give Quesnel a 2-0 lead.
The Kangaroos added three more in the second. Brody Dale scored twice, with Roch adding a power-play goal between them, to extend Quesnel’s advantage to 5-0.
Alessio Tomassetti added another early in the third before Brody Dale completed his hat trick midway through the period, with Thon and Austin Crossley assisting.
Kitimat was held off the scoresheet despite receiving five power-play opportunities over the course of the game.
