Going into Friday’s must-win game against the Halifax Wanderers, Vancouver FC coach Martin Nash was talking about improvement and how it takes time.
“It’s already going to be the highest finish the club has ever had in the league [even if the Eagle don’t make the playoffs]”, Nash observed during a pre-game press conference.
He said he could see, in a year or two, Vancouver FC becoming a team that’s “fighting for the the top two [spots] every year.”
That goal is a little closer, following the Eagles 2-1 win over the Wanderers, a victory that maintains their grip on the fourth playoff spot.
It was an essential win for the Eagles, who earlier that night watched FC Supra du Québec jump ahead of them into fourth place.
Midway through the opening half, Morey Doner fed a low ball into the box that defender Thomas Meilleur-Giguère intercepted — but he knocked it straight to Thierno Bah, who fired home (with a deflection off Kareem Sow), giving Vancouver the lead.
Then, Wanderers scored just before halftime.
With 15 minutes to play, the Eagles Kian Proctor found Aboubacar Traore, who had just been subbed in for the injured Bah.
Matteo Campagna got his head on Traore’s ball, directing it into the net and sending the fans into a frenzy.
With three crucial points, perhaps the most important three points in club history, Vancouver will have a some breathing room in next Sunday’s regular season finale in Calgary against Cavalry FC.
Canadian Premier League Final will take place on Saturday, Nov. 21 with the venue to be announced.
