Doug McCallum has been elected to serve as the mayor of Surrey for a fifth term – handily defeating incumbent Brenda Locke as he led his Safe Surrey Coalition to almost-total victory.
McCallum defeated former Locke by winning 42,241 votes (31.78 per cent) from Surrey voters (with 163 out of 164 tabulators calculated), compared to 30,750 votes for Locke (23.14 per cent). Voter’s ballots placed mayoral candidates Mike Starchuk and Linda Annis at third and fourth in the election results, respectively.
A smiling, waving McCallum greeted an exuberant crowd at Bombay Banquet Hall after his win, with his supporters cheering, whistling, and waving election signs.
McCallum thanked the crowd before speaking briefly.
“We will address your safety and we will address your infrastructure. I want to thank my family for all the years they put up with me and my political career. I want to thank also my many, many friends around the world I’ve had,” McCallum told the crowd. “I want to thank also all of the candidates and their families, and I want to thank the volunteers and and all the supporters that have supported us during this election.”
“I love Surrey, but I even love the people of Surrey more. Together we’re going to build a great city and our families will live in a town that goes to sport and joy and we’ll work together to make it one of the best global cities in the world. So go Surrey go!”
McCallum was first elected Surrey mayor in 1996 and served in the role until 2005, and was elected again in 2018 with his Safe Surrey Coalition, before being defeated by Locke in 2022.
McCallum did not give interviews after his victory. Although media was instructed to wait at a designated media area of the banquet to speak to McCallum, after waiting for an hour, media were finally told McCallum had left the building.
McCallum’s Safe Surrey Coalition slate also dominated the race for Surrey city council, claiming seven of eight spots – with Doug Elford, Meera Gill, Mandeep Nagra, Suhana Gill, Allison Patton, Laurie Guerra and Cheney Cloke making it into the eight spots.
Only Harry Bains from Surrey Connect broke up the monopoly, topping the polls in the one bright spot of the night for Locke’s almost-obliterated slate.
See how it all rolled out on Election Night.
