A rookie defenceman who will forever be part of Penticton Vees history has made Canada’s U17 World Challenge roster.

Thor Liffiton, the WHL franchise’s first-ever draft selection, is one of 44 players set to play for one of the nation’s two squads at the tournament, set for Oakville, Ont., from Nov. 1 to 7.

Liffiton, 15, will play for Canada Red.

The Calgary, Alta. native has one assist in his first 10 career WHL games in 2026-27.

One of the youngest players currently suiting up in the WHL, Liffiton was selected fourth overall in the 2025 WHL draft.

It marked the inaugural draft for the Vees, who, to mark the occasion, made the selection of Liffiton live in front of hundreds at the Lakeside Resort.

Along with Canada Red and White, the U17 World Challenge will welcome Czechia, Finland, Sweden and the United States.

Liffiton and Canada Red will start their tournament against Finland on Nov. 1.

“We are excited to unveil the 44 athletes who have earned the opportunity to represent Canada at the U17 World Challenge in Oakville, as this is an important step in their development and progression through the (Hockey Canada) Program of Excellence,” general manager Alan Millar said. “Many of these players will wear the Maple Leaf for the first time and be introduced to international competition, and we know all 44 are excited to play for Canada and attempt to win a fourth consecutive gold medal.”

Of 44 to be selected for Canada, 17, including Liffiton, currently play in the WHL.
