Prince Rupert school trustee race takes shape as eight candidates nominated

Prince Rupert’s school trustee election race is taking shape with eight candidates nominated for the six School District 52 trustee seats representing the City of Prince Rupert.
The nomination period closed at 4 p.m. on Sept. 11.
Three incumbent trustees are seeking re-election, and five newcomers have entered the race for the six positions representing Trustee Election Area 1.
The School District 52 Board of Education has seven trustees. Six are elected from Trustee Election Area 1, representing the City of Prince Rupert. One is elected separately from Trustee Election Area 2. Area 2 includes the District Municipality of Port Edward and parts of Electoral Areas A and C of the North Coast Regional District, including Lax Kw’alaams, Metlakatla, Dodge Cove, Oona River, Kitkatla and Hartley Bay.
Who is seeking re-election?
Three current trustees, Kristy Maier, Danielle Dalton and James Horne, have been nominated to seek another term on the board.
Maier is currently serving as vice-chairperson of the board and as the board’s representative on the BCSTA Bargaining Representative Council.
Dalton and Horne are also current board members. Horne serves as the board’s BCSTA Provincial Council representative.
Who is new?
Five newcomers have been nominated for the six Prince Rupert trustee positions.
The new candidates are Katherine Beach, Jeremie Diesel, Martin Pariseau, Mary Denton and Karen Buchanan.
What happens next?
The Northern View has contacted candidates with questions about why they are running, the challenges facing students and public education, and what they hope to accomplish if elected.
Each candidate was asked the same questions to give voters a chance to compare the priorities, perspectives and plans of those seeking a seat on the School District 52 board.
Because not all candidates have publicly available email addresses, candidates who have not yet received the questionnaire are invited to contact The Northern View reporter Stacey Lawson at stacey.sawyer@thenorthernview.com to receive the questions.
Candidate responses are due to The Northern View by Sept. 26 and will be published as part of the newspaper’s coverage of the 2026 local election.
General voting day is Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026.
