Scammers stealing new phones Cowichan RCMP warn

Scammers are stealing people’s brand new cell phones, North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP warn.

The swindle targets individuals who have recently received a new cell phone through a legitimate wireless provider, RCMP said in a press release.

Victims are contacted by someone claiming to represent their service provider and are told that the wrong phone was shipped to them. They are then instructed to return the device using a prepaid shipping label sent by email.

Victims send their phones back, only to find out that the package was delivered to an unauthorized address rather than the service provider. They are never sent the promised replacement, and never see their previous phone again.

“These scammers can be convincing and often have information that makes the request appear legitimate,” says Const. Tessa McDonald, media relations officer of the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP. “If you are contacted and asked to return a recently purchased phone, take the time to verify the request directly with your provider before sending anything.”

How to protect yourself:

• Contact your service provider directly using a verified phone number before returning any device.

• Be cautious of unexpected calls, emails, or text messages regarding a recent phone purchase.

• Confirm shipping and return addresses with your provider independently.

• Never provide personal or account information unless you have verified who you are dealing with.

• Report any suspicious activity to your service provider and local police.
