BC SPCA offers low-cost spay, neuter program in West Kootenay

Low-income pet owners in the Columbia Basin can apply for reduced-cost spay and neuter procedures through a BC SPCA West Kootenay program.
The program, supported by local grant funding, also includes microchipping and registration with the BC Pet Registry.
“We’ve seen a number of animals, especially kittens, surrendered this year because their families can’t afford vet care,” says Danielle Jackman, BC SPCA West Kootenay manager.
“Our hope with this program is for more families to be able to access spay/neuter procedures for their pets to help reduce the number of unplanned litters.”
The BC SPCA West Kootenay received about $27,500 in combined funding from the Osprey Community Foundation and Resident Directed (ReDi) Grants provided by Columbia Basin Trust.
According to the organization, the full amount of available funding is used each year.
About 175 animals were spayed or neutered through the program last year.
Under the low-income program, a cat spay or neuter typically costs the pet owner $50, while a dog procedure costs $150.
Further financial assistance may be available depending on individual circumstances.
Columbia Basin residents can apply for a voucher through the BC SPCA’s Community Spay and Neuter Program.
Eligible applicants will be contacted by BC SPCA West Kootenay with information about booking an appointment and can select from participating veterinary clinics in the region.
The BC SPCA West Kootenay also provides pet food, cat litter and other supplies to families in need.
