Sarah Zimmerman will again carry the BC NDP banner in Skeena, days after she withdrew from the Terrace council race.
Zimmerman, a sitting Terrace councillor who had filed to seek another term, appeared on the city’s Sept. 11 declaration of candidates but was absent from the final list issued after the Sept. 18 withdrawal deadline. The BC NDP has now announced her as its candidate in Skeena.
Zimmerman said her approach to representing Skeena would centre on collaboration and building relationships.
“Good representation starts with building relationships across sectors to bring people together and get important projects done,” Zimmerman said. “I know firsthand the powerful impact of working together, and I will bring that strong, effective approach to Victoria to represent Skeena.”
Zimmerman ran for the BC NDP in Skeena in the 2024 provincial election, finishing second to B.C. Conservative Claire Rattée by 824 votes. Rattée received 6,243 votes, or 51.20 per cent, while Zimmerman received 5,419 votes, or 44.44 per cent.
Zimmerman will now contest the riding in a snap provincial election called by Premier David Eby on Sept. 22 after a week of speculation in political circles. The election is set for Oct. 24, one week after municipal elections scheduled across B.C. for Oct. 17.
In a release, the BC NDP said Zimmerman is returning to the campaign with a focus on protecting local jobs, lowering costs and strengthening health care. Those priorities align with the party’s broader campaign focus on protecting B.C. jobs in response to threats from U.S. President Donald Trump, opening new markets to reduce dependence on the United States, lowering costs and tripling recruitment of U.S.-trained health-care workers.
Zimmerman is a former journalist and entrepreneur who has also held senior communications roles.
“Sarah brings professional experience and a deep personal commitment to Skeena,” Eby said. “As a Terrace city councillor and former executive director of communications at Coast Mountain College, she understands the needs of communities in the Northwest and will be a strong voice for local families.”
