2 dead, 1 injured after crash on Highway 1 in Burnaby

Two people are dead after a two-vehicle crash on Highway 1 in Burnaby just after midnight on Sept. 23.
Burnaby RCMP received a report of a pickup truck travelling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 1 that had just collided with another vehicle, a four-door sedan, travelling westbound around 12:15 a.m., B.C. Highway Patrol said in a news release Wednesday.
Two passengers in the sedan were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver of the sedan was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but police added the injuries are “not believed to be life-threatening.”
Police said the driver of the pickup truck was arrested and transported to the Burnaby RCMP detachment for the investigation.
While the investigation is in its early stages, police said alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash. Burnaby RCMP’s Criminal Collision Investigation Team and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service are both working on the investigation.
Highway 1, which has since reopened, was closed for hours.
Police are now looking for witnesses and dash-cam video on Highway 1 in either direction, between 1st Avenue and Gaglardi Way from midnight to 12:30 a.m.
