2 men charged with second-degree murder in connection with death of Penticton’s Rex Gill

Charges have been laid in connection with the death of Penticton’s Rex Gill, who was shot outside a Kamloops hotel room close to eight years ago.
Two men have been charged with second-degree murder following the January 2019 incident, Kamloops RCMP said on Sept. 19.
Police responded to two fatal shootings that occurred about an hour and a half apart that year. Gill and Cody Mathieu were later found deceased at separate hotels in Kamloops.
RCMP say they believe the shootings were directly linked, with Hugh Alexander McIntosh, 58, and Brandon Dale Fiddick, 34, charged with second-degree murder of Gill.
Gill was not known to the men charged, with the long-unsolved murder believed to be a case of mistaken identity, police said.
Both men were arrested and detained by a judicial justice on Sept. 19.
“This horrific event had a profound impact on the victim’s family and our community,” Supt. Jeff Pelley of the Kamloops RCMP said.
“This is a testament of the persistence, commitment, investigative skill and unwavering determination of our Serious Crime Unit and those that contributed over the years. Most importantly, there is an opportunity for some resolution to those affected by this tragic event, as we remain committed to the communities we serve.”
Since his death, Gill’s mother, Marie, organized a motorcycle ride across the South Okanagan every September in his memory.
Thousands of dollars were raised every year in support of the Kelowna Gospel Mission and the Penticton Alliance Church food bank, as a result.
