Iconic Canadian rock band Trooper performs at Red Deer Recovery Day

Canadian rock band Trooper performed a free outdoor show in downtown Red Deer during a Recovery Day celebration.
The event, hosted by Last Door Recovery Society, was one of three Alberta Recovery Day events this month. There was also an Edmonton event on Sept. 19 with performances by Sloan and Bif Naked, and a Calgary Calgary event on Sept. 20 with Tom Cochrane and Ben Chase.
“Everybody has been affected by addiction in some form,” said Giuseppe Ganci, Last Door Recovery Society director of community development.
“We’re really thrilled to work with these amazing Canadian artists for Recovery Day.”
Last Door Recovery Society is a non-profit charity that has provided addiction recovery services since 1984. It operates facilities in Red Deer and Calgary.
The Recovery Day events across the province were part of the National Recovery Month movement, said Ganci.
“During September we raise awareness about recovery for mental health and addiction,” he explained.
“It’s an opportunity for people to recover out loud and remind people that there is hope — recovery from substances is possible. We see addiction on the street every day, but this is an opportunity to see recovery on the streets, and remind people about the many pathways to recovery.”
The event isn’t just about people in recovery, Ganci added.
“Today is for our moms, our dads, our kids, our families and our friends to come celebrate with us,” he said.
“It’s also an opportunity for those with loved ones at home who are still suffering. They can come learn about local services. It’s a mix between a health information and a concert to make it fun.”
There were about 40 booths set up during Recovery Day in Red Deer, including artisans, service providers and organizations that support people battling addiction.
