‘Connecting with community’: Food distributed to 30+ non-profits at 3rd annual Farm Day in Kelowna

Thursday, Sept. 24 was a special day as community came together to spread the joy and need for food across the Central Okanagan.
The 24th was the third annual Farm Day held at the Kelowna Fruit Stand. At the event, organized by the Lake Country Food Bank, Cabin 5 Granola, and Kelowna Chevrolet, produce is purchased from local farmers and then distributed to 30 non-profit organizations across the Central and North Okanagan.
“It’s a way of supporting the local farmers and the industry and getting the product back into the community,” Joy Haxton, executive director of the Lake Country Food Bank told Black Press Media. “Some of the farmers have been really generous and [donated] on top of the product that was given, so that made the volume larger.”
The food was being distributed as far south of Peachland and as far north as Armstrong.
Unlike the first two years, the food wasn’t sent out from the Kelowna Fruit Stand to the non-profit organizations. Instead, the opposite happened this year, the non-profits came to the Fruit Stand to pick up their orders.
“This is [about] connecting with community, and the thing about this is when you connect with one group, they connect you to another group, and it’s that whole willingness to work together and cooperation,” said Haxton.
