National Defence Minister David McGuinty confirms there have been both fatalities and injuries after an incident at CFB Wainwright in Alberta.
McGuinty provided the update in a late-night news conference in Ottawa Saturday.
“I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base.
McGuinty couldn’t provide specific numbers on those dead or injured. He called it an “active and delicate situation.”
Wainwright RCMP responded to a request for assistance at CFB Wainwright on Saturday around 4 p.m., with early reports that there was a fire at a training area.
McGuinty said his understanding is the fire is “still being monitored very closely.”
He said they’re currently “working through the details of what actually occurred,” adding there will be “more to say in the coming hours and days.”
McGuinty added the Canadian Armed Forces, the Department of National Defence, partners across the federal government including Public Safety, are working with the Government of Alberta and municipal governments.
Wainwright RCMP say its initial involvement in the response is “winding down,” and any further details regarding the fire will come from the Canadian Armed Forces.
