The Beaver Valley Nitehawks went the distance, but fell in extra time against the Grand Forks Border Bruins and the Osoyoos Coyotes on the weekend.

The Nitehawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Border Bruins battled back and veteran forward Austin Tellefson scored his first of the season in a 3-2 overtime win over the Hawks on Saturday, Oct. 3 at the B.V. Arena.

Tellefson beat Nitehawks goalie Cohen Fowler on an unassisted effort 3:00 minutes into the OT period to give Grand Forks it’s first win of the season.

With the OT loss, the Nitehawks record falls to 3-1-1-1 and currently sit in third place in the Kootenay division, while Grand Forks are 1-5-0-0 good for fifth place in the six team division.

Trail product Ben Fragle netted his first of the season to give B.V. a 1-0 lead at 15:22 of the first period.

The Hawks made it 2-0 when Owen Dickson wired a shot top shelf to give the home team a 2-0 lead at 7:30.

But before the period was out, the Border Bruins Ethan Miller beat Fowler with a blast top shelf, and on a scramble in front of the B.V. net, Hayden Evans sent the puck through a mass of bodies to tie it with 66 seconds left in the opening frame.

Bruins goalie Cole Fox stymied the Nitehawks in the second period as the home team outshot the visitors 16-8.

The play went back and forth in the third, with the Bruins awarded the only power play early in the final frame, but did not capitalize.

The Nitehawks outshot the Border Bruins 36-28, and went 0-for-2 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.

In Friday’s match, the Nitehawks gave up a late power-play goal in regulation, and Osoyoos won it 5-4 in a shootout in front of their home crowd.

The Osoyoos and Nitehawks goalies stopped the first five shooters, but Coyotes forward Mason Rudolph beat B.V. goalie Kayd Mercier for the game winner.

The Nitehawks led the physical match up 3-2 after 40 minutes on goals from Brady Walker, Rhys McLean, and Casin Ward.

The Coyotes tied it at three on Taynon Charters’ first of the campaign, but Hawks defenceman Vance Amyotte replied with his first to restore the one-goal lead with 4:35 remaining.

However, after Amyotte was sent off for tripping, Coyotes forward Ollie Reid beat Mercier on the power play with 34 seconds left to tie it and force the extra frame.

The Hawks outshot the Coyotes 42-39, and were 0-for-5 on the power play, while Osoyoos went 1-for-5 with the extra man.

The Nitehawks are on the road next week with three games starting in Kimberley on Friday, Oct. 9, Columbia Valley Saturday, Oct. 10 and in Fernie on Sunday, Oct. 11. The puck drop goes at 7 p.m. MT in Kimberley and Invermere, and at 4 p.m. MT in Fernie.
