Architectural plans for $101 million middle school have been submitted to the City of Kelowna for development permit approval.
The city received the development permit application on Oct. 16. The current plans, drafted by Station One Architects – a Chilliwack based firm – show a three-storey building spanning over 3,800m in sq. ft. located at 1555 Burtch Rd. besides the Apple Bowl and the site of the – in progress – renovated Parkinson Recreation Centre.
Originally, the school was supposed to be a location for a new secondary school, but shifted to a middle school due to size limitations. Station One said the building is being designed to hold 800 students from Grades 6 to 8, 100 staff plus 200 NLC members. The school is currently being dubbed the Burtch Middle School, but the name may change.
The planned school’s features include:
First floor
• Gymnasium with Storage area
• General Office
• Multipurpose Room
• Indigenous Room
• Neighbourhood Learning Centre
• Food Rooms
• Tech and Woodshop Rooms
• Music and Drama
Second Floor
• Collab, Flex spaces and Breakout rooms
• Biology, Chemistry, Physics labs with prep spaces
• Learning Commons
• Business Classroom
• Special Education Room
• General Instruction Classrooms
Third floor
• Collaborative, Flex spaces and Breakout rooms
• Art Rooms
• Learning Commons
• Business Classroom
• Special Education Room
• General Instruction Classrooms
“This program and the layouts will provide a range of options suited to different class sizes and preferences. The first-floor collaborative spaces—including a multi-purpose room, Gym, Multipurpose room, Indigenous room, NLC, Tech and Woodshop Rooms, Music and Drama —are not only integral to the school programs but also create the social fabric of the School community, encouraging active engagement and daily connection among students, teachers and parents alike,” Station One said in the application.
The plans can be viewed at the City of Kelowna’s website.
