Construction begins on major Abbotsford overpass

Crossing Highway 1 will soon be even easier for Abbotsford commuters, with the construction of the new Peardonville Road overpass recently getting underway.

This overpass project is part of the Fraser Valley Highway 1 Corridor Improvement Program and is the final part of the program to begin construction.

While the current Peardonville Road crossing is only two lanes, this new overpass will be expanded to include four lanes, with 1.6 km of Highway 1 surrounding the overpass also getting new HOV and bus lanes.

Transportation and Transit Minister Mike Farnworth said this overpass, which is being built by Emil Anderson Group, is a major improvement for the entire region.

“People in the Fraser Valley deserve to spend less time sitting in traffic and more time getting where they need to go,” said Farnworth.

“We know construction can be disruptive, but the work underway is about making travel safer, more reliable, and more convenient for people who live, work, and travel through Abbotsford.”

Although the $119.4 million project has now begun, it isn’t expected to be completed until 2031.

Abbotsford Mayor Ross Siemens said these types of highway improvements are necessary for the city.

“Abbotsford is growing and our transportation infrastructure needs to keep pace with the people, families, and businesses who call this community home,” said Siemens.

“We appreciate the Province of B.C.’s investment in Abbotsford to help deliver safer, more efficient transportation connections that will support our growing community and benefit residents for generations to come.”
