The province’s fall immunization program launched on Oct. 19 to help protect Albertans against serious illness from the influenza, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Primary Care Alberta (PCA) said vaccines are safe and effective, and getting immunized against is one of several important steps Albertans can take to prevent the spread of illness.

Starting Oct. 19, appointments are available through PCA public health clinics and participating pharmacies. Where people should book their appointment will depend on their age and the vaccines they are receiving.

Albertans can visit primarycarealberta.ca/getimmunized to learn which immunizations are right for them.

To book an appointment at a PCA public health clinic, visit: myhealth.alberta.ca/topic/immunization/pages/book-appointment.aspx or call Health Link at 811. Immunization can also be booked directly through pharmacies, which may also accept walk-in patients.

Albertans can also speak to their primary healthcare provider if they have immunization questions.

Additional precautions to protect against the spread of respiratory viruses include:

• Stay home when feeling sick.

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick, whenever possible.

• Wash hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

• Cover coughs and sneezes, followed by cleaning hands.

• Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and items at home, especially when someone is sick.

• Wear a well-fitting mask in crowded indoor spaces to help reduce the risk of becoming sick and to help protect others from being exposed.
