A trio of forestry experts will be in Penticton later this month to discuss the challenges current industry practices present to the environment.

Among them is former Prince George MLA Mike Morris, who will make up one-third of the expert panel at Oasis United Church (2964 Skaha Lake Rd.) on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

Morris will be joined by Dr. Younes Alila, UBC Professor of Hydrology, and by local ecologist Dr. Kasey Moran.

Climate advocacy groups First Things First Okanagan and Council of Canadians South Okanagan Chapter are hosting the event. They say the panel will discuss “the issues B.C. residents and the environment face from current forestry practices.”

Morris, an MLA from 2013 to 2024, is also the former Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General under B.C. Premier Christy Clark and a retired RCMP officer.

Alila, meanwhile, was featured in the documentary Trouble in the Headwaters, which follows his exploration of the Kettle River headwaters to discover the source of the flooding.

Moran rounds out the panel by bringing experience working with the Okanagan Nation Alliance, the Okanagan Basin Water Board, and UBC. She currently works with the Okanagan Similkameen Conservation Alliance.

The event starts at 7 p.m., with doors open at 6 p.m. A one-hour presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer period, organizers said.

“This is an opportunity to learn about how we can keep communities safe, provide jobs, build the economy, all while protecting water and biodiversity,” Lori Goldman from First Things First Okanagan said in a press release.
