Royal Canadian Legion Branch 250 has completed a major fundraising campaign that the Kitimat branch says will help secure its future and that of its community facility for generations to come.
With support from community partners, local businesses, organizations and volunteers, the branch says it has completed a series of significant renewal projects over the past several years to modernize its facility and continue serving veterans, their families and the broader Kitimat community.
“None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the generosity of our community partners and the countless hours contributed by our dedicated volunteers,” Branch 250 said in a press release.
The latest phase of the building renewal project moved forward this week after LNG Canada Development Inc. donated $14,795, allowing the branch to reach the $24,000 needed to install a new state-of-the-art heat pump system.
The branch said the new system will significantly improve the building’s energy efficiency while reducing its environmental footprint.
The balance of the heat pump funding was raised through branch fundraising efforts and, in large part, through a long-term partnership agreement with the Kitimat Lodge of Freemasons. The lodge’s long-term rental commitment, with payment made in advance, provided a substantial contribution toward the project.
The heat pump is the latest in a series of improvements undertaken at the Legion building over several years. Those projects have included replacing flooring in both the upstairs hall and downstairs lounge, renovating and redecorating the lounge, repainting the exterior of the building and upgrading washroom facilities to improve wheelchair accessibility.
The building was originally constructed in 1955.
Several years ago, Branch 250 also installed a video-conferencing centre in its upstairs hall. The system allows community organizations to host meetings and events that can be shared live with participants around the world.
The renewal work comes as Branch 250 prepares to celebrate 70 years of service to veterans, their dependants and the Kitimat community. The branch said the investments will help ensure the facility continues to serve as an important gathering place for decades to come.
“On behalf of all our members, we extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who supported these fundraising efforts,” the branch said. “Your generosity, partnership, and commitment to our community have made these achievements possible. Together, we have strengthened Branch 250 and ensured it will continue to serve future generations of veterans and the Kitimat community with pride.”
