The Kiwanis Club of Red Deer has made an impact on the city for three quarters of a century.
The club hosted a 75th anniversary celebration dinner at the Golden Circle Senior Resource Centre on Saturday, Sept. 19.
“Kiwanis has been very active here in Red Deer for 75 years. There’s a lot of legacy that’s been left here,” said Monica Morrison, Kiwanis Club of Red Deer president.
“We participated in building of the Child Advocacy Centre, Ronald McDonald House, we have some stuff in Highland Gardens. When you really start looking around, it’s amazing how many places Kiwanis has been involved in.”
The Golden Circle, the site of the 75th anniversary celebration, was also a Kiwanis Club project, Morrison noted.
“There has been a lot of additions to the original building since it was built in 1977. But this was the 25th anniversary project,” she said.
The event featured speeches from dignitaries and club members, booths highlighting organizations the Kiwanis Club of Red Deer has supported over the past 75 years, and more.
“The Kiwanis Club is like a family,” said Morrison.
“When you’re working together and all supporting the same cause, it creates cohesion. It creates social opportunities as well. We get together for monthly dinners to break bread together and catch up with each other.
“Way back when the club first started, a big purpose was to create business connections and build social opportunities. A lot of that hasn’t been lost.”
The Kiwanis Club of Red Deer currently has 25 active and 10 honorary members. Morrison said the club is always looking for new members.
“We’re looking for that next generation to join. We have older members who are getting too old to do the physical work, so we need to rebuild,” she said.
“We’re always looking for people who want to be part of Kiwanis and believe in the work that we do. It’s all about the kids. A lot of our projects support children. There’s some spinoff where we support seniors because that’s originally what we did. But the big push now is supporting children.”
