Lorne Doerkson to remain as B.C. Conservative leader if elected premier

There is no plan to hold another leadership race if the B.C. Conservatives win the provincial election, the party’s board says.
The party’s board of directors said Wednesday (Sept. 23) that if interim Leader Lorne Doerkson leads the party to a victory on Oct. 24, he will remain as party leader.
The board says it will take the appropriate steps under the party’s constitution and bylaws and the Societies Act to make that change.
To amend the constitution, the party board would need to call a general meeting.
“A premier chosen by British Columbians deserves the certainty of leading his party. This amendment will provide it,” the statement reads.
Doerkson became interim leader after a unanimous caucus vote on Sunday.

That vote came after Kerry-Lynne Findlay resigned from the role, following a tumultuous few weeks when 10 MLAs left the party citing issues with her leadership and she kicked three others out from caucus. All returned to the party afterward.
Former B.C. Conservative executive director Angelo Isidorou suspected this would be the case the day before the snap election was called.
“If he runs and wins, he will remain as both the party leader and the premier by virtue of a simple constitutional amendment to the party constitution,” Isidorou said.
