Man arrested after midnight attacks in a Vancouver Island college campus’s residence

Comox Valley RCMP are currently investigating an aggravated assault at Courtenay’s North Island College campus.
Police responded to multiple calls at 12:53 a.m. reporting an assault with an edged weapon at one of the campus’s residence buildings. Police located two victims with injuries quickly after arriving at the scene. Officers identified and arrested the suspect, a 21-year-old man from Burnaby. The man is currently in custody pending a court appearance.
As of 10 a.m., the scene remains secured. Investigators with the Comox Valley RCMP Major Crime Unit are still examining and gathering evidence at the scene. The unit is being assisted by the Island District Forensic Identification Section.
“The investigation remains in its early stages, and officers are working diligently to uncover all of the circumstances surrounding this disturbing incident,” said Const. Monika Terragni of the Comox Valley RCMP. “The motivation behind the assault remains under investigation.”
Police say they are working with the college during the course of the investigation, and Victim Services are providing support to the victims and witnesses affected.
Investigators are still trying to determine what led to the assaults, but do not believe that there is an ongoing threat to public safety. e
Both victims are in hospital and expected to recover from their injuries.
