Murray Maxwell, a beloved member of Penticton’s hockey community who died in August, is getting his own night at the South Okanagan Events Centre.
The Vees have announced Murray Maxwell Night at the rink on Friday, Oct. 9, when the club hosts the Brandon Wheat Kings.
Maxwell was a longtime fan and contributor to the Vees, dating back to when the franchise was known as the Knights and Panthers in the BCHL. He was 70 years old.
“Murray was one of those special people who made a lasting impact on everyone who knew him,” Vees president, general manager and head coach Fred Harbinson said. “His love for the Vees/Panthers and our city was genuine, but more than anything, I’ll remember the relationships he built with the entire hockey community.”
In a statement this week, the Vees said Maxwell was “a well-known face for every Penticton Vee who came to this city to play hockey.”
Tributes were quick to pour in on social media when the news of his death was made public this summer.
“The Vees will always remember Murray and all he meant to the organization and the city,” the WHL club said. “He will be forever immortalized within the South Okanagan Events Centre.”
Murray Maxwell Night will feature a pre-game ceremony, video tribute and more, the team added.
Puck drop for the game is at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at valleyfirsttix.com or at the SOEC box office.
