Nelson youth IIO investigation closed

B.C.’s police watchdog has concluded their investigation into the arrest of a youth in Nelson on Aug. 11, 2026. The investigation determined has determined that there is no connection between police actions or inaction and the injuries the youth sustained while in custody.
According to a report released Sept. 15, the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) says around 11 p.m., a member of the Nelson Police Department (NPD) arrested a youth who appeared intoxicated and became uncooperative with the office on Hume Lane between Vernon and Baker St. The youth was later transported to NPD cells.
“While in custody, the youth sustained injuries and was assessed by BC Emergency Health Services. He was then transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for additional assessment and treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries,” reads a statement from the IIO.
The youth was later released from the hospital to his parents.
The chief civilian director has reviewed the evidence collected by IIO investigations and says there is no connection between police actions or inaction and the youth’s injuries. The investigation is now concluded.
