A prescribed burn covering up to 30 hectares is planned for the Penticton area.
BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), along with the Okanagan Shuswap Natural Resource District and Penticton Indian Band, will be conducting the burn as early as Oct. 13.
Part of an ongoing wildfire risk reduction project for the area, the burn is planned to take place northeast of Penticton, adjacent to municipal boundaries and Reservoir Road, BCWS said.
“Smoke will be visible from Penticton, Naramata, Summerland, surrounding areas, and to motorists travelling along Highway 97,” the provincial service noted.
Although the burn is expected to take place on Oct. 13, its exact timing will depend on weather and site conditions.
Helping restore forest health and removing fuels to reduce the long-term risk of wildfire are also the objectives of the burn, BCWS officials said in a release.
“Hand treatments, including thinning, pruning, debris clean up and pile burning have been conducted in the past for the project.”
