The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation will be recognized with the Community Gathering for ReconciliACTION on Sept. 30, hosted by several groups in Red Deer.
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a statutory holiday that recognizes residential school survivors, their families, and communities to ensure the history and legacy of residential schools are publicly remembered.
Sept. 30 is also Orange Shirt Day — Every Child Matters, which started as a grassroots initiative, and has evolved into a national movement. The orange shirt symbolizes the loss of culture, freedom, and self-esteem that many Indigenous children experienced.
The Community Gathering for ReconciliACTION is a free event, open to the public to learn, reflect and honour the day.
Activities include:
• 8 a.m. – Pipe ceremony in the Reflection Tipi in Heritage Square.
• 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. – Community gathering at the MAG for storytelling, films, Indigenous games, space for reflection, connection, and art making.
• 1 to 4 p.m. – Free Barbecue in Heritage Square.
• 6 to 9 p.m. – Community Round Dance at Festival Hall.
The Community Gathering is supported by funding from the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation component of the Government of Canada’s Commemorate Canada program, and the City of Red Deer’s Community Culture Development Fund.
