Nicolas Deslauriers, Logan Stankoven and Nikolaj Ehlers each scored twice, leading the visiting Carolina Hurricanes to a 6-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks in NHL action Tuesday at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.

Jackson Blake added three assists for the defending Stanley Cup champs (8-2-1), while Pyotr Kochetkov made 14 saves to earn the win in goal. Linus Karlsson, Jonathan Lekkerimaki and Max Sasson replied for the Canucks (2-8-1) who are winless in eight games. Jake DeBrusk chipped in with two assists and Leevi Merilainen took the goaltending loss, stopping 36 of 41 shots.

Stankoven open the scoring 4:44 into the first period, taking a backhand pass in the slot from Blake and beating Merilainen. It was the former Kamloops junior star’s fifth goal of the year.

The Canucks pulled even midway through the period when Karlsson picked up the puck after some nifty stickhandling from centre Elias Petterson and firing a shot blocker-side past Kochetkov. Karlsson now has three goals on the year.

Two minutes later, Ehlers restored Carolina’s one-goal lead, slotting a pass from Blake into a wide-open goal for his second marker of the season.

With time running out in the period, Lekkerimaki beat Kochetkov with a buzzer-beater on the power play to make it 2-2 after 20 minutes. Lekkerimaki has three goals on the year.

Early in the second period, ‘Canes enforcer Deslauriers tallied his first of the season, lifting a shot over Merilainen to make it 3-2 Carolina.

At 13:07, the Canucks pulled even once more, with Sasson finishing off a nice give-and-go with Zeev Buium for his third of the year.

With 3:05 left in the period, Carolina’s Sebastian Aho was awarded a penalty shot after Pettersson was ruled to have thrown his stick, but he was foiled by Merilainen.

Shots after 40 minutes favoured the Hurricanes, 28-11.

Deslauriers added his second of the game 4:07 into the third, going to the net and taking a feed from Bradly Nadeau and slipping a shot past Merilainen to put the ‘Canes up 4-3.

Ehlers then added his second of the night midway through the period, breaking in alone and firing a shot behind Merilainen to give Carolina a 5-3 advantage.

Vancouver pulled Merilainen in favour of an extra attacker with just under three minutes to play and Ehlers found Stankoven who scored into an empty net with 2:03 to play for his sixth of the year – and fifth against the Canucks in two games.

Final shots on goal were 41-17 Carolina.

NOTES: During the game, the Canucks paid tribute to former goalie and beloved broadcaster John Garrett, who died earlier this year… Stankoven had a sizable number of fans at the contest… Vancouver was without Marco Rossi (illness) and Thatcher Demko (hip injury)… Vancouver was 1-for-2 on the power play, while the Hurricanes were 0-for-5.
