Trail events mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Art, traditional teachings and opportunities for community learning will be part of events in Trail leading up to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Wednesday, Sept. 30.
At VISAC Gallery, A Gathering of Indigenous Voices is underway through Oct. 8, bringing together the work of Métis, Anishinaabe, Cree and Hesquiaht artists Johnny Mukwa, Mark Anthony Jacobson, Kassondra Pelletier and Laura Lee Graves.
Meanwhile, the Trail Museum and Archives and its community partners are offering two afternoons of programming at the Trail Riverfront Centre in recognition of the national day.
Community Gathering and Learning Events will run from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28 and Tuesday, Sept. 29 at the Trail Riverfront Centre.

Faith Zacherle-Tonasket of the Sinixt Confederacy will share traditional plant teachings, while Zacherle-Tonasket and Kate Mizenka of Elk Root Conservation will lead elderberry tea making and tasting.
Author Eileen Delehanty Pearkes will lead a discussion about the Columbia River, salmon restoration and artifacts.
A Gathering of Indigenous Voices opened Sept. 14 and features Hesquiaht-rooted abstract works by Graves, informed by Woodland teachings, alongside Woodland works by Mukwa, Pelletier and Jacobson.
VISAC says the exhibition is intended to create a shared space where the artists’ distinct practices, lineages and stories can stand alongside one another while inviting the community to experience the work on its own terms.
The gallery is open Monday through Thursday from noon to 4 p.m.
