A new commemorative crosswalk on Memorial Avenue at Fir Street is moving forward after the Town of Qualicum Beach awarded a $122,727 contract to Coastline Civil Inc.
The crosswalk is being designed as a commemoration of local veterans, connecting the town’s pedestrian-safety improvements with its commitment to remembering those who have served.
The project will provide a safer, more visible crossing for people accessing the weekly Farmers’ Market and nearby community destinations. It includes the commemorative crosswalk, solar-powered rectangular rapid flashing beacons, a new LED streetlight, sidewalk improvements and curb realignment.
Six quotes were received through BC Bid, with Coastline Civil submitting the lowest bid.
The project was originally proposed in 2024, but the crossing location was moved after staff determined that poor sight distance on Memorial Ave. could create a safety concern.
The project has a $124,500 budget, with approximately $17,500 already spent on equipment, design and preparations. The estimated total cost is $140,227, with the roughly $15,000 overage to be covered through savings elsewhere in the capital program.
Construction cannot begin until a Memorandum of Understanding is finalized with the Island Corridor Foundation because of the crossing’s proximity to the railway corridor. The town hopes to complete the project before Remembrance Day on Nov. 11, although that timeline could change depending on the agreement.
The town is working to get this matter sorted out with ICF.
