Initial reviews were positive for “Hometown Giants,” a six-episode television series about the Langley-based WHL team, with commenters praising the behind-the-scenes look at the WHL franchise, while at least one warned it might not be suitable for young viewers.
It follows the 2025-26 season of the Giants, centered on the involvement of singer Michael Buble and “Property Brothers” TV show star Drew Scott as part-owners in the campaign “to restore a team that hasn’t won a championship since 2007,” to use the words of the press release announcing the series had begun airing on Oct. 16, exclusively on Amazon’s Prime Video.
“With a new coach and General Manager leading the way, the series captures the bold front-office decisions, roster-shaping trades, and high-pressure moments that define a season on the edge,” the release said.
Online reviews were positive, praising the show for its focus on the young players.
Movieguide.org said it was “worth the watch” while advising episodes “feature frequent foul language and some mild violence when players fight on the ice. This is an engaging watch for hockey fans and newcomers to the sport, as well as teens and adults, but the youngest viewers should skip it.”
Daniel Baptista on The Movie Podcast described it as a “distinctly Canadian underdog journey that reminds you what makes sports so special. Heartfelt and hopeful, Hometown Giants is the kind of story you can’t help but cheer for.”
User reviews on Internet Movie Database gave it eight out 10.
On Redditt, one viewer called it “pretty good.”
“The bit where they’re in the dressing room after a tough loss and you can just see how young these kids are hits you. They’re trying to be pros but also texting their moms after the game.”
Another advised that “for anyone who may not be familiar with major junior hockey it’s an interesting insight into this weird hybrid of high school, college and minor pro sports that really only seems to exist in the hockey world.”
One poster noted the show didn’t go out of its way to acknowledge the location of the Vancouver Giants home at the Langley Event Centre, saying “as someone who lives close to the LEC … I find it funny that there are establishing shots of Vancouver followed by shots of the rink as if it isn’t 45 minutes outside of Vancouver.”
Several noted the approach was similar to “Welcome to Wrexham” the series about actor Ryan Reynolds’ experience as co-owner of Welsh soccer club Wrexham.
According to Rolling Stone magazine, Bublé and Scott reportedly consulted Reynolds before embarking on the Giants project, and he advised against it.
