Vernon’s newly elected officials weren’t the only winners during Saturday night’s election.

The Vernon Vipers gave their largest crowd of the season plenty to cheer about, completing a weekend sweep of the Salmon Arm Silverbacks with a 6-4 victory at Kal Tire Place Oct. 17.

“More than 2,200 fans packed the building for Hockey Fights Cancer Night, and the Vipers delivered another impressive offensive performance to improve to 9-1-1-0 and take over top spot in the BCHL standings,” the snake pit game day report reads.

Toms Trockis led the offensive charge with a pair of goals and an assist, while Mason Kim continued his strong start to the season with a goal and a helper. Martin Cerny, Josh Denes and Tommy Karmiris also found the back of the net as Vernon spread the scoring around once again.

Cole Ellis and Ben Trebicky each chipped in with two assists, helping the Vipers secure their second consecutive six-goal performance against their Shuswap rivals.

Between the pipes, Sammy DiBlasi was busy once again, turning aside 30 of 34 shots to backstop the victory.

“Special teams also played an important role in the win,” After the Buzzer reports. “Vernon had just one opportunity with the man advantage and couldn’t convert, but the penalty kill came through in a big way, successfully killing off five of six Salmon Arm powerplays.”

Cash Olson, Alexis Beaulieu, Ethan Facchina and Vital Dinis supplied the offence for the Silverbacks, while Mikkel Christensen made 23 saves on 28 shots.

The victory capped off an outstanding weekend for the Vipers, who scored 12 goals in two games against Salmon Arm, following Friday night’s 6-2 triumph at Rogers Rink.

“With the weekend sweep in the books, Vernon now sits atop the BCHL standings and carries plenty of momentum into a challenging stretch away from home.”

The Vipers now hit the road for five consecutive games over the next two weeks, beginning Wednesday night in Okotoks against the Oilers.
