The Wetaskiwin community hit the links for a good cause this year, helping the 9th Annual Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools (WRPS) Golf Tournament raise more than $24,000 in support of local students on Aug. 29 at the Montgomery Glen Golf Club.
The annual tournament brought together WRPS staff, community members, local businesses, sponsors and supporters for a day of golf, fundraising and fun, all with one goal in mind: helping students throughout WRPS.
This year’s total of more than $24,000 makes it the most successful WRPS golf tournament to date and continues a strong tradition of community generosity.
“We continue to be amazed by the generosity of our community,” WRPS stated in a press release.
“Whether someone entered a team, sponsored the tournament, donated a prize, purchased a raffle ticket or volunteered their time, every contribution played a part in this year’s success. Most importantly, those dollars will go directly toward supporting our students.”
Funds raised through the tournament support three WRPS initiatives: the Education Plus Fund, Hungry Students Fund and Period Promise Fund.
The Education Plus Fund helps remove financial barriers that may prevent students from participating in educational, extracurricular and enrichment opportunities.
The Hungry Students Fund supports nutrition initiatives for students, while the Period Promise Fund helps ensure students have access to menstrual products when they need them.
The impact of the tournament has continued to grow. The 6th Annual Tournament raised approximately $12,600, followed by $12,000 at the seventh annual and $18,000 at the eighth annual. This year’s total of more than $24,000 represents a significant new milestone.
Over those four tournaments alone, the community has helped raise more than $66,000 for WRPS students.
“The success of this tournament really demonstrates what can happen when our schools, businesses, employees and community come together,” said WRPS. “We are incredibly fortunate to have people and organizations who recognize the importance of investing in our kids.
“With nine tournaments now in the books and a record-setting year to celebrate, WRPS is already looking forward to reaching another milestone with its 10th Annual Golf Tournament.”
