B.C. NDP works to tie Doerkson to former Conservative leader Findlay

The NDP campaign is working hard to cast doubt on whether the B.C. Conservative Party would stick with interim Leader Lorne Doerkson after the election, and instead tie the party to recently resigned leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay and her followers.
Doerkson was appointed interim leader, and party rules stipulate that an interim leader cannot run to be permanent leader. But the party’s board of directors released a statement on Wednesday pledging to do what it takes to change the constitution and clear a path for him if he is elected premier.
B.C. Attorney General Niki Sharma sought to convince voters that this is an uncertain proposition.
“If you go to page 10 of their constitution, what that would require was a two-thirds vote of their membership,” she said. “Now, we have to keep in mind that this is the same party membership that voted Kerry-Lynne Findlay as leader.”
Former party executive director Angelo Isidorou expects that if Doerkson wins, the mandate to the membership will be clear enough to make it an easy task to alter the constitution.
“He would probably overwhelmingly have the support at that point to pass that bylaw at a special general meeting or an annual general meeting,” Isidorou said.
Sharma also sought to highlight that Findlay quit as Conservative Party leader knowing an election call was coming, seeking to dispel the notion that Eby was unfair for triggering a snap election when the opposition lacked a permanent leader.
“This is a decision of their doing, not ours,” she said.
