Two-time Canadian Olympic curler and national champion Jocelyn Peterman encouraged Central Albertans to stay involved in the sport at the Women in Curling Summit in Red Deer.

Originally from Red Deer, Peterman returned to her hometown to serve as the keynote speaker of the summit and to give some curling guidance to the 50 or so event participants at the Red Deer Curling Centre on Saturday, Oct. 3.

Peterman said, through her keynote speech, she wanted to develop a connection by highlighting what women in sport go through — both the struggles and opportunities.

“I want to encourage these women to stay in the sport, especially the young girls here today,” said Peterman.

“There are so many opportunities in curling and sport in general. With the right support, they can continue to be coaches, volunteers and leaders within the sport. That’s what today’s all about: getting together and keeping women in the game.”

After her speech, Peterman got onto the ice and helped improve summit participants’ curling skills.

“It’s fun to be on the sheet together with people of all skill levels. Some are competitive young athletes, others have been playing for 50 or 60 years. It’s a lot of fun. I’ve just been trying to give everyone some tidbits to help them get better to start their season,” said Peterman.

“This is my home club. My dad was the ice maker here when I was growing up. Obviously there have been lots of renovations since then, but it still very much feels like a piece of home for me.”

Peterman currently plays lead on Team Kerri Einarson and mixed doubles with her husband Brett Gallant. She’s already played in a couple events this season, with another set for this upcoming weekend. Then the first Grand Slam of Curling event of the 2026–27 season is Oct. 13-18 in Victoria, B.C.

Also leading workshops and speaking at the Women in Curling Summit Dana Ferguson, 2019 Scotties Tournament of Hearts champion, three-time Grand Slam winner and national wheelchair curling coach; and Heather Nedohin, two-time Tournament of Hearts Champion and a two-time World bronze medallist.

Darcy Smith, Red Deer Curling Centre curling co-ordinator, said the summit was a great opportunity for local women.

“Our theme today is ‘Strong minds, strong women, stronger game,’” said Smith.

“We’re bringing women together for a day of learning, networking, presentations. … There are on-ice and off-ice portions to today’s event. Part of today is about growing the game with women and how they can get involved, not only by playing, but also volunteering.”
