Kitimat council has approved a 2.9 per cent increase to mayor and councillor remuneration, effective Jan. 1, 2027.

The higher rates, approved at the Sept. 29 regular council meeting, will apply after this fall’s election, when the new council has taken office, rather than during the term of the council that approved the increase.

The mayor’s annual remuneration will rise from $52,235 to $53,750, an increase of $1,515. Councillors will receive $29,825 annually, up $841 from $28,984. The adjustment will add $6,561 to the 2027 budget.

Council chose to establish the new remuneration before the end of its current term. It departed from its usual August-to-August Consumer Price Index calculation and instead used the 2.9 per cent B.C. CPI increase from July 2025 to July 2026.

Council gave the bylaw three readings Sept. 8 before approving its adoption.
